Lakewood City Review

Lakewood is the 82nd largest community in California as a suburb in Los Angeles, California. It is 11 miles away from Long Beach, 24 miles away from downtown Los Angeles, and 16 miles from Anaheim.  With a population of 79,412 people and 16 different communities it is ranked in size from medium to large.

Lakewood is a relatively new community which did not become a city until 1954. It grew rapidly during this decade and was very well developed by the year 1960. Most of the housing in Lakewood is single family homes. The parks and open space have about 150 acres dedicated to it. In 1954 Lakewood contracted all the municipal services which was a new idea because it was the first city in the nation to do so. Los Angeles County provides most of the services along with a few alternative public agencies providing these with the rest of them by the private sector. Many suburbs in Los Angeles have also taken this approach.

Denny’s restaurant was originally created in Lakewood in the year 1953. It was first known by Danny’s Donuts and founded by Harold Butler. In 1959 the restaurant was renamed to Denny’s restaurant. In 2005 Lakewood took the title of “Sportstown USA” in California by Sports Illustrated.
