Hollywood City Review

Hollywood, located North West of downtown Los Angeles is a district that is very well known in popular culture. It is the center of where movies are made and stars are born. People use the word Hollywood as more than just a city and instead it directly refers to the movies. Tinseltown is yet another term that has been used to describe the movie industry. It has spread into surrounding areas as well while industries including effects, props, lighting, and editing have seeped into Hollywood. Hollywood is a very popular spot for tourism and night life as well.

What many people do not know is that films were created in Los Angeles before they were in Hollywood. In 1906, the film a Daring Hold-up was filmed by the Biograph Company. Los Angeles obtained its first studio in 1909 when construction was started by the Selig Polyscope Company.

Hollywood’s first major film was accomplished on October 26th, 1911 and set at the Whitley home, but did not have a real name. Hollywood was home to studios from Warner Bros, Columbia, RKO, and Paramount along with smaller companies. These helped spur its growth from a small suburb to a larger city with a purpose regardless of what anyone in the area wanted.

Modern Hollywood
The Hollywood Freeway was built during the 1950’s. It started at Four Level Interchange in Los Angeles, went right past the Hollywood Bowl, up Cahuenga Pass, and ended in the San Fernando Valley. It was a common location for street cars to run on rails.

In 1958 the Hollywood Walk of Fame was created to give tribute to artists who were well known in the entertainment industry. In 1960 the very first star was laid down for Joanne Woodward.

Los Angeles County finally extended the Metro Red Line in 1999 which ran from downtown Los Angeles to the valley and stops included Vine Street, Highland Avenue, and Western Avenue.

Hollywood is still where many films are produced by the majority of studios are elsewhere in the Los Angeles area.  Hollywood is Paramount Pictures. The district is home to many smaller ones though.

Revitalization
Hollywood has been on the downslide after many years of lacking upkeep and a new urban revitalization has spread through the area. Redevelopment has highly been centered on the Hollywood and Highland complex along with many bars, clubs, and other retail locations. Many lofts and condominiums have also been constructed lately with the first being Cosmo Lofts.

County Representation
In the year 2000 210,777 people lived in the Hollywood area. Each mile has a density of 8,443 people. The racial makeup is quite broad and includes 59.84% white, 9.44% Asian, .13% Pacific Islander, 4.28% African American, .62% Native American, and a whopping 19.10% from other races while 6.59% are from multiple races. 34.51% of people identified themselves as being Hispanic which may be of any race or races and almost half (49.63%) of the people living in Hollywood were foreign born. The majority (46.24%) are from Latin America, 32.73% from Asia, 17.80% from Europe and 3.23% from elsewhere.

Education
Children attend the Los Angeles Unified School District when living in Hollywood with the representative being Marlene Canter as of 2008.

Attractions
