Highland Park City Review

Highland Park is located along the Arroyo Seco which is served by a light rail system that runs at street grade parallel to Figuero Street until it turns east into South Pasadena as a district of North East Los Angeles.

Highland Park is one of the most scenic areas in all of Los Angeles along with being one of the oldest settled areas. The scenery is influenced due to the location of being between the Monterey Hills, Mount Washington Hills, and San Rafael hills along with the incredibly architecture in the area. The Ernest E. Debs Regional Park and Arroyo Seco Park are among the large parks which contribute to the scenery.

The Metro Goldmine light rail
which travels between both Pasadena and Union Station and winds all throughout Highland Park is considered one of the most enjoyable public transportation systems. A variety of hills, valleys, and parks can be viewed along the ride. Mount Washington, which is located close by, is home to The Southwest Museum contains one of the largest collections of Native American Artifacts in the country.

The development of the Mid-Wilshire district in the 1920’s which continued until the 1960’s and 1970’s which added new neighborhoods in San Fernando Valley in the north west and Temple City to the east allowed Highland Park to experience white flight. Overdevelopment in the 1960’s allowed land prices to decline and many Latinos migrated to the area. In the 1970’s it became known for being a predominantly Latino area. The racial demographic of the area allowed many races and ethnicities to settle there along with immigrants and it became a very diverse home for many individuals. The diversity is one thing that has been appealing for residents in Highland Park.

Many people decided to move to Highland Park to try to buy and revitalize Craftsman homes that hadn’t been kept up in the past few decades before the big Southern California housing prices decided to take a hit in the years 2002-2005. This continues on today but the results are not nearly as dramatic as the nearby Echo Park, Eagle Rock, and Silver Lake results. The Highland Park district is very common among the hipster crowd especially because it is close to the low rent nearby neighborhoods. Doormen and velvet ropes are common scenes in the dive bars which can be found locally.

Many people wonder if the area is going to remain an area that has change and growth due to the low quality of Highland Park’s Schools in comparison with nearby schools in Eagle Rock, South Pasadena, and Mount Washington. Young individuals will not seek to live in areas where the school quality is low. The locals who have made Highland Park a home already think that schools are decent and include the fact that they have bilingual programs available to foster the ethnical diversity.

In the Media
Many movies have been filmed in the Highland Park area because of the beautiful scenery. In La Bamba the dance hall scene was filmed on Avenue 53 at the VFW Hall. Jeff Bridges starred in the film Cutter’s Way which was filmed mainly on Aldama Street. Highland Park also hosted the filming of Reservoir Dogs.
“Up in Smoke” starring Cheech and Chong along with James Spader’s hit film Tuff Turf were also shot in Highland Park along with Jim Carrey’s film Yes Man.

Many Hot Rod builders, from the period of the 1950’s until the 1980’s, made Eagle Rock and Highland Park this havens. Although few hot rod shops exist anymore, at 5251 York Blvd. you will find McGibbons Auto Body. He was one of the original creators of low-rider graphics and paints along with hot rodders beginning in the 1970’s and continuing forward.
