The city of Glendale, with a population of roughly 200,000 people spread out to 28 individual neighborhoods, is ranked as the 15th largest city in California. The city was established in 1906 and is located near the Los Angeles area, approximately 10 miles to the north east, which has a much larger population of 17 million.
The first individuals to live in the area were the Tongva Indians. In 1798 the first European-American arrived, Jose Maria Verdugo. Glendale is the home of the very first runway created on the west coast in the year 1923 at the “Grand Central Airport”, which is now owned by the Disney Corporation. This was not its only claim to fame though. Howard Hughes used it as his site for the H-1 racer and Jack Northrop built airplanes here as well. It was also the training location for the P-38 pilots in World War II. It almost got the title of “All-American City” in the year 1992 issued by the National Civic League.
