Downey is located just 13 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
Downey has a fun landmark history, having it’s McDonald’s restaurant maintaining its original “Golden arches”. Downey’s McDonalds was the third franchised McDonald’s built in 1953 and still has it’s “Speedee” sign. Today it has an adjoining gift shop and museum. The first Taco Bell was opened in Downey in 1962.

Downey is located in southern California in Los Angeles County. It was established in 1956 and is twenty minutes from Los Angeles while being twenty minutes from Long Beach as well.
The city was both named after and founded by John Gately Downey who was a previous California governor. He founded it during the 1870’s. Downey contains a bit of food history and currently has the oldest McDonald’s in the world while also being the home of the First Taco Bell restaurant. Richard and Karen Carpenter who were from the singing group the Carpenters also attended Downey High School.
Downey has a population of 107,323 people and is classified as a medium sized city with sixteen individual neighborhoods.
The composition of Downey is a mixture of both blue-collar and white-collar. The city contains sales and office workers, professionals, and managers.

Landmarks
The oldest McDonald’s is still operating and is located on Florence and Lakewood directly in Downey, California. It was the third McDonald’s ever built and was listed on the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places List. It was actually one of the first ever franchised by Mac and Dick McDonald and the golden arches are still seen in many locations worldwide along with the speedee sign which stands 60 feet tall. It was actually closed down in 1994 after the Northridge earthquake occurred and caused some damage. The public pushed for it to be re-opened and after two years of preservation and restoration it was opened for business to the public along with a museum and gift shop. The first Taco Bell was opened on March 21st, 1962 in Downey.
Johnie’s Broiler was a coffee shop and restaurant. It has been featured in many sitcoms, movies, and music videos and construction was completed in 1958. It was closed in 2001 when a car dealership leased the property and in 2007 the building started to get torn down illegally. Although it was halted, it suffered some damage.
