Bel Air City Review

Bel Air is a residential community on the west side of Los Angeles, CA.  Bel Air is one of the three points of what they call the triangle of Los Angeles, with the other two points referring to Beverly Hills and Holmby Hills.

Bel Air was founded in 1923. Bel Air is at the foothills of the Santa Monica Mountains and is roughly 17 miles away from downtown Los Angeles to the west. You will find UCLA to its south and in the center of the area are both the Hotel Bel-Air and the Bel-Air Country Club.

Residences
Bel Air is a very affluent area and the houses follow this path. Houses are not visible from the roads too often and many of them hide behind gates or hedges to keep themselves concealed. The variety in homes include mansions, multi-story homes, and ranch style homes as well. The homes in the area usually have very large grounds even if the home seems modest. The wealth is seen in height in Bel Air. The smaller and more modest homes are near the top of the hills while the wealthiest individuals can be found in lower Bel-Air due to the close distance to Sunset Boulevard which is a major appeal to many homeowners. Individuals who are along both Linda Flora Drive and Stradella Road are lucky that they can see both the Catalina Island and Los Angeles basic from their homes in a panoramic view type.

Bel Air is very strict with rules, regulations, and ordinances to keep the community to its high standards. There are many restrictions from the size of someone’s lot to the landscaping and architecture in someone’s home which make Bel Air the community that it is. There are no multifamily units allowed and there are also no sidewalks which helps discourage individuals from strolling along in the neighborhood. The area also has a security team to patrol it frequently staffed by a few of the local security companies.

Ronald Reagan lived in Bel Air after his retirement up until he died in 2004. Nancy Reagan still lives there and can be seen frequenting Bel Air Presbyterian Church.

Attractions
One lovely attraction that is wonderful to visit is the Hannah Carter Japanese garden located at UCLA. It is a beautiful and elegant location that Bel Air is known for.  The inspiration for the design is directly from Kyoto. Much of the structures were actually originally built in Japan including the main gate, bridges, shrine, and garden house. Once they were transported here they got reassembled. Some of the other structures from Japan include the water basins and lanterns. Locally, tons of stones were brought in from both the foot of Mr. Baldy and quarries found in Ventura County.

Television and Film
Bel Air is not a foreign name to TV and film. The Fresh Prince of Bel Air was based on this neighborhood but more specifically at 805 St. Cloud Road and many location shots for the famous show Beverly Hillbillies, were taken of the mansion that is still standing on 750 Bel Air Road.

Demographics
The neighborhood is quite small and has a population of 7,928 people according to the 2000 census. It is predominantly white with 86.24% of people being white, 6.84% Asian, 4.65% Hispanic, 1.93% black, 0.06% Native American, .04% Pacific Islander, 1.30% from other races, and 3.59% of people identified themselves as two or more races.  For updated statistics the Mapping LA project from the Los Angeles Times stated the population was still 7,928 people but the income level was $208,861 on average.

Public Schools

Bel Air belongs to the Los Angeles Unified School District represented by Steve Zimmer as of 2009.
